Project: The Quilt of Silence

Activities and Operational Information

We are making a quilt with faces of children who have lost their lives as a result of a gunshot on the front. On the back of each quilt square will be a message from the families.

The quilt is a tool to be used in the education of Firearm Safety. We plan to educate children, parents, teachers and school officials to help keepguns out of our schools and out of reach of children.

The quilt will travel from community to community, school to school, church to church, to community centers, etc. Videotapes made by youth groups talking to all age children, K-12 grades will travel with the quilt. The tapes will include everything from what to do if they see a gun to what will happen to you if you shoot a person with a loaded gun, accident or not!! It will also address what happens to the families of the people involved in a shooting and what type of future is in store for these people. For small children, it will explain the difference between life and death and what it means.

Counselors experienced in dealing with children will assist youth groups in making the tapes.

Members of our organization are not against guns. We believe in the right to bear arms. We do have the right to protect our families from intruders. We do NOT have the right to have weapons without keeping them in a safe place, out of reach and sight of children.

As part of our project, we plan on adding firearm safety to parenting classes, and to set up Firearm Safety Instructor Classes etc.
