I enjoy being around, watching, interacting with, training, laughing at & with, learning about and from animals! If I had to pick a favorite species I guess it might be horses, (by a VERY small margine!).
I can't remember a time when I didn't have a dog around. I think that makes me very lucky! I've bred Catahoula Leopard cowdogs for . . . gosh, I guess its been over 35 years! There's NOTHING quite like having a good dog for a friend. I've even had my hound dog save my life!
Motiger is our resident cat. He likes to ride on the wheelbarrow as I feed hay to the stock. He loves it when I take the strings off the bales of hay. He tries to catch the end of it as I tie it up. Despite having been declawed, Motiger is a great mouser and, (unlike many before him) has successfully avoided the local coyote population.
My father, (Clyde W.) raises registered Jersey milk cows and he's got so many their names are determined by their birth order! Ol #274 above just had to see what I was doing! I like Jerseys too, and I own a couple. I also own two Holsteins, (the popular black and white milk cows). I milk them all and market the milk I don't use myself as pet food.
My Mom used to raise registered Saanen milk goats. She had 30 milkers. Between Mom's goat dairy and Dad's Jersey dairy all us children had our hands full avoiding chores! Every once in a while Mom caught me and I had to milk the goats. Actually, neither parent seemed to have any trouble finding any of us human "kids" when chore time rolled around! Consequently, I've been around a lot of goats. I like the Nubian breed of goat best and Angora Goats with their long soft hair are interesting because I enjoy spinning and weaving. I think the Nubian's long floppy ears and roman noses cool! I prefer to drink cow's milk, but it's not a strong preferance so I often drink goat's milk also. When properly handled goat's milk is good, just as when improperly handled cow's milk is horrible!
I enjoy watching sheep, they're timid yet calm. When gentle they are so trusting of their humans. It's refreshing! The excuse I use to keep them is that I spin and weave their wool. I know, it's not very Cowboy like, but then I'm not like anyone else anyway!
I keep Aracauna, (pronounced air-a-kaa-na) chickens because they lay an egg with a green shell and I like unusual things. I really do have Green Eggs and Ham for breakfast sometimes! Aracauna eggs are colorful and I red somewhere that their eggs are cholesterol free!
