Submissions:
The Earwig Flesh Factory is accepting short fiction, flash fiction, and
prose poems for issue # 3. Published by Carlton Mellick III and edited by William P. Simmons, this issue will be the darkest descent into the macabre
and bizarre yet! We want your sinister glimpses into surreal and grotesque fantasy. Only submit original work that is eerie and challenging to the mind and senses. There is a place for traditional horror and mainstream fiction, but this isn't it! Put your cold hand in ours and guide us through mind-bending landscapes, shocking visual attacks, and the pain of disturbed minds. We especially covet fictions that submerge readers into unfamiliar experiences and settings, challenging standard perceptions or definitions of reality, logic, and traditional genre style. Bizarre but believable
characters are a plus. If your story or short-short depicts a realistic
landscape or events, you must in some way blur or ravage the boundaries
between the real and fantastical, normalcy and the unexpected. EFF
submerges readers into uncharted geographies of nightmare and doubt. We
don't give them re-writes of yesterday's best seller or classic stock
monsters. If I see a vampire or ghost, there had better be an excellent
spin or burst of originality accompanying it. We'll consider any content
or style that overthrows reality or the expected, peeling back the illusion
of existence and lovingly pointing at the festering boils beneath. This
includes a variety of styles and sub-genres: dark fantasy, surrealism,
macabre expressionism, the absurd, urban fantasy, dark magical realism,
sinister science-fiction, or horror with an experimental flavor. Think
Barker, Kafka, Beckett, Steve Resnic Tem, etc. Better yet, liberate your
obsessions and imagination from academic classifications and develop your
own tastes and style.
Short stories should preferably be between 1000 -4000 words, but if you
think your piece is excellent and fits our tastes, send it anyways. Be
aware that I favor quality over quantity, and am always on the look out for
flash fiction or prose poems of around 100-200 words. Short pieces
condensing powerful characters, emotions, and disturbing events are
especially desired by the editor. No simultaneous submissions. Multiple
submissions for shorter works are acceptable, even encouraged. Send only
exceptional reprints that you feel are ideal for EFF, as very few will be
published. Send all Email submissions to the editor, William P. Simmons.
All Email submissions must be pasted into the body of an email message.
Due to the threat of viruses, no folders will be opened. All snail mail
submissions must be sent to Carlton Mellick III. All submissions will be
read for individual quality, not your previous track record. We especially
enjoy working with new authors. The editor will try to give a brief
critique of work rejected.
Payment for stories is a three dollar "appreciation fee" plus one copy of
the magazine your work appears in. Payment for short-shorts and prose
poems is one gorgeous copy of The Earwig Flesh Factory. That, and the
pleasure of contributing to the genre, proudly flaunting your masterpiece
to the awe of friends and family as you convince them to subscribe to "the"
magazine of bizarre dark fantasy and surrealism.
