Midnight Lullaby

Words/Music © by Deborah Baudoin

We passed each other in the starry night.
You held your breath, and then you closed your eyes.
Your voice was soft and clear,
Your words were sharp with fear,
Lost in a midnight lullaby.

Two spinning dancers in a cosmic game.
No one can win, no one can take the blame.
You never lose your way.
You're bound by yesterday.
Lost in a midnight lullaby.

Do you hear her singing you to sleep at night?
Do you hear her voice above them all?
Can you see her waiting in the shadowed light,
Hear her calling through the whispers in the hall?

Am I to blame for all the things you've lost?
You keep yourself apart despite the cost.
You're just a little girl
In this big, crazy world.
Lost in a midnight lullaby.

Do you hear her singing you to sleep at night?
Do you hear her voice above them all?
Can you see her waiting in the shadowed light,
Hear her calling through the whispers in the hall?

I never met her, but I know her soul.
You keep her in your heart; you can't let go.
You hold her close at night.
You can't give up the fight.
Lost in a midnight lullaby.
