USS Harlan County (LST 1196)

Homeport: Little Creek Virginia
Commissioned: 08 Apr 1972
Decommissioned: 14 Apr 1995

"Newport LST Class"
The most distinctive feature of the class are the two derrick arms on the bow, which support a thirty-ton, 112 foot bow ramp. The bow ramp extends forward and down to load and unload tanks and other and other vehicles onto a beach, pier, or causeway. A second ramp, underneath the bow ramp drops down from the main deck to the tank deck to provide access to the parking area amidships. The tank deck is 426 feet long and is capable of storing twenty AAVs (Amphibious Assault Vehicles). A stern gate at the aft end of the tank deck can be lowered to launch AAVs at speeds of up to 15 knots. The stern gate can also be utilized to load and unload other vehicles into an LCU (Landing Craft Utility boat) or onto a pier. The ship's flight deck can accommodate most types of Navy helicopters. The sleek hull design makes the Newport Class LSTs capable of twenty plus knots

"Any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction, I SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY."
