SOUTHERN BREWING COMPANY

By DAVE PARADINE

This Brewery first opened in 1934 at 700 E. Zack Street in Tampa.

There main beer in Cans were "SB" Beer, and Silver Bar Ale. Both of these
were produced at first in Cone Tops with both (Beer + Ale) having IRTP
labels which dates them before 1950. The "SB" Cone Top was also produced
in non IRTP, meaning after 1950. The rarity of these Cans gives me the idea
that the Cone Tops were produced for a very short time, about 3 years
or less 1948,49-1952. Flat top Cans came out in the early 50's with Silver Bar Premium Ale,
Silver Bar Sparkling Ale, and Silver Bar Premium Lager Beer. According to
the USBC book by the BCCA there are 9 different Silver Bar Premium
Lager Beer Cans. Kip Sharpe BCCA# 25106 wrote another Excellent article, this one titled
"Southern Brewing, Tampa Florida".
In this Article He goes into very detailed information about the Brewery
such as, How much Beer was produced at different times, who were the Main
People in charge, and there successful advertising gimmicks.

In 1956 the Brewery was purchased by International Breweries, Inc. (IBI)
IBI went on for another 7 years until 1963.
Check out IBI on my main page ("MY COLLECTION") for many more collectible
items from this Brewery (IBI).

This is a early advertisement from SB. It is a Mileage Chart, which by pulling the neck of the bottle and holding the base, it will give you Miles from one City to another in Florida. A total of 17 Cities are cross referenced. Not sure on the Date of this, does have a "Patent Applied for" sign, by Bowman Studios, Tampa.

These are old Linen Post Cards that both show Franklin Street, looking South, Tampa Florida. The one on the left is post-marked 1942 Augusta GA. Looking closely at upper right corner is an "SB" Beer and Ale advertisement sign on the side of the tall building towards the top. The postcard on the right shows a night scene that also shows the sign, "SB" is clearly visible on the center building towards the top. I beleive there is one more PC that shows this sign and a dust cover to a book (I want for my Collection) that shows this building and sign in a real photo.
I have found that book (pictured), it's a newer edition and not the one with a dust jacket. Shown is close up off sign in question. A Great historical perspective on Southerns advertising.
This Post Card is also a linen type card but is probably newer possibly later 50's. It shows the same building and sign yet the sign has been changed to "Wolf Brothers".

There are many many items that I need from the Southern Brewery, that's what makes this Hobby so interesting! There always seems to be something new (that is old) that I have never seen before. Always looking for knowledge about this Brewery. Do you know someone that possibly worked there, or heard stories about the Brewery or about there Beer? Please give a Holler, that knowledge will be noted and Greatly Appreciated and shared with all.

Mark Stober of New Tampa has this Silver Bar Premium Sign in His Collection. "Hail, Hail, Silver Bar Ale" with a logo of a donkey drinking a beer, a Silver Bar bottle, a music jingle, and a small description of the brewery and invitation to visit at Zack and Pierce Street "phone 2-1511" Has some damage, but an Excellent Advertising Promotion. Thanks Mark!

I have been constantly checking Ebay auctions and other auctions for Fla. items for the last several years. I have acquired hundreds of photo’s and there ending prices. If you have anything Florida Brewery related, I would be happy to reference a value to your item. I would tell you what I would give for it and an Honest opinion of what you may get for it at auction or from another Collector. I can also sell your Florida Brewery item on Ebay, using detailed pictures and a professional layout. Conditions of items greatly effect the value especially with Cans. But there are items that are “one-of-a-kind” that will demand a higher value regardless of condition.

HEY !!! Give Me a Holler!!!!
