WHAT IS mp3?

mp3 is a way of encoding sound files to a fraction of their original size using MPEG compression. MPEG is the "Moving Picture Experts Group", working under the direction of both the International Standards Organization (ISO) and the International Electro-Technical Commission (IEC). This co/op establishes standards for the coding of moving pictures and audio. By encoding a wave (.WAV) file using mp3 compression we achieve a 10:1 compression ratio. Basically this means that you can take 4 minute CD-quality wave file which is about 40Mb and encode it to a mp3 file of approx 4Mb! The best thing about this is that there is no significant loss in quality. However you need a special mp3 encoder to make these mp3 files and a special mp3 player to listen to them. There are many mp3 players that can be downloaded free at http://www.nordicdms.com/software. WinPlay is a popular mp3 player, although WinAmp has more features it requires more CPU time. Without mp3 coding, downloading uncompressed CD quality audio files from a remote Internet server would result in extremely long transmission time. For example, with an average transmission rate of 28.8 kbaud, a single 3 min. stereo track from a CD (31.7 Mbyte) would require a download time of more than 2 hours.
