He brodcasted for the Cubs for 15 years. He made laugh and kept me interested in the so many Cubs games we watched together, even though he was always in Chicago and I was in Matthews. This legendary broadcaster best known for his phrase, "HOLY COW!" passed away.
Sometimes I'd lay on the floor in front of the TV. I'd listen, and then asleep I fell. It was so funny when he'd be calling a play and mis-pronounce the player's name. Yeah, then Harry would be all like, "What's that guys name? Her-nan-dez??" Man, this guy knew everything about baseball too. He'd recall times when poeple did this and that before I was even born.
Well, just another good person taken from this
world. This is like a Jeff
Buckley repeat on my heart. My infinite sadness.... I never met Harry, but
I feel like I've known him somehow ever since Ryne Sandberg joined out church, Desert
Cross Lutheran, back in 1988. Maybe it was Harry's simple explanations on how the
game was played, or the excitement in his voice that helped me believe that I was indeed
at Wrigly Field. A Cubs broadcast will never again be the same for. Harry was
baseball for me. The only thing bigger than his glasses was his heart.
I read somewhere when asked his plans for retirement, he summed up his plans in one word: "Never." Yeah, Harry and his grandson, Chip, were supposed to brodcast together for the 1998 CUBS season. That would've been interesting to watch. Chip is broadcasting this year with Mr. Steve Stone which is cool. Still, you gotta think it would've been great for Harry and Ryno (he retired in 1997) to stick around for another season.
