This is the sorty of a girl who made her dreams come true after she came to possess the seven stars of Suzaku and many powers were bestowed upon her. This story itself is a spell, the one who reads it thru will be given the powers and granted a wish just like the girl in the story because the story begins and becomes real the moment the first page is turned.

Fushigi Yuugi is an anime and manga series created by Yuu Watase, There are 52 episodes in the TV series, 2 OAVs that continue where the TV series left off, a music video special, and the original manga. Fushigi Yuugi is licensed by Pioneer here in the US released under the title Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play (which is what Fushigi Yuugi translates to in English). Fushigi Yuugi is a shoujo anime that is primarily aimed at a teen girl audience in that it focuses more on emotions and relationships (and there's a TON of great looking guys ^_^). There's comedy, romance, drama, and action all blended perfectly into this wonderful fantasy series. The story goes something like this...

MiakaYuuki Miaka and Hongo Yui are best friends leading normal 14 year old lives...that is until that fateful trip to the library. All Yui wanted to do was return a library book, and instead herself and Miaka get absorbed into an ancient Chinese novel entitled "The Universe of Four Gods". Now in ancient China, Miaka and Yui are confused, frightened, and to make matters worse they get attacked by some perverted men! It is here we are introduced to Tamahome, the handsome man with a glowing kanji on his forehead, who saves Miaka and Yui from the nasty thugs. Tamahome walks off after learning that he will not be paid for his "heroic effort" and Yui gets transported back to the real world as she goes after him! Miaka, now all by herself in this strange world, hitches a ride on a wagon, thus starting on her search for her best friend and ends up in the country of Konan where she clearly sticks out like a sore thumb in her school uniform. Eventually, she meets up with Tamahome again, who agrees to help her find Yui, but guess where Yui is? Yui is back at the library reading the novel; every action Miaka takes, all the characters Miaka meets, etc.

YuiEventually, Miaka and Tamahome end up at the palace of Konan and meet the young Emperor Hotohori. Hotohori takes an immediate liking to Miaka and grants her the honor of becoming the Suzaku No Miko. Her job? To find the 7 guardians of Suzaku, summon the divine god, and bring eternal peace to Konan. Miaka gladly excepts this responsibility, not realizing how hard the task is really going to be. Though she does have a pretty good start being that she gets to live at the palace with Tamahome and Hotohori. We also learn that Tamahome and Hotohori are 2 of the 7 seishi of Suzaku, so finding the other 5 shouldn't be THAT hard right?

In "The Universe of Four Gods", there are 4 countries: Konan is the southern country and Suzaku the Red Phoenix is it's worshipped god. Sairou is to the West where Byakko the White Tiger is worshipped. Hokkan country is located in the cold northern area where it's god is Genbu the Black Turtle. And lastly, Kutou is the eastern (and VERY powerful and aggressive) country where Seiryuu the Blue Dragon is the divine god. Kutou's shogun, Nakago, is a very sadistic and powerful man. He is one of the 7 guardians of Seiryuu and the most powerful. Later on in the series, Yui gets brought back into the novel and becomes the Seiryuu No Miko. This presents a problem being that Yui and Miaka are best friends...but that friendship beings to crumble as the race for omnipotent power begins between the 2 countries.

And so starts the adventure portion of the series. Miaka journeys to many lands in ancient China, makes some really cool friends, suffers MANY hardships, falls deeply in love, deals with internal confusion, conflict, and later on...her best friend becomes her worst enemy.
