Eclectic Solitary Wicca - FAQ

  • What do you call your path?

    Eclectic Solitary Wicca (ESW)

  • Is it a traditional path or one of your own creation?

ESW, especially Morgaine's branch of it, has its roots in several of the more we ll-known Trads of Wicca, but has grown past the constraints of the traditional f orms to be a living organism on its own.

  • What characteristics of your path distinguish it from other paths?

ESW is not as strict in its ritual forms and teachings as some of the more tradi tional forms of Wicca, such as Gardenarian and Alexandrian. The path draws from widely-varying sources, some of which are not even pagan in nature. These includ e, but are not limited to: Christianity, Taoism, television commercials, children's stories and other "mainstream" novels.

  • Does your path have a Rede, or Spiritual Motto?

ESW follows the traditional Wiccan Rede to a certain degree, however, it has a p lace for "binding spells", which traditionally fall outside " 'an it harm none". For more information on the Eclectic Solitary Wicca -- Morgaine's Branch Rede, see the contact information below.

  • Is there a written doctrine for your path? What does it consist of?

The written doctrine for ESW is Morgaine's Book of Shadows (BoS). It consists of ritual frame, quarter calls, tarot information, general belief structure, the r esults of the 4-elemental personality inventory, herbal lore, et cetera. The inf ormation contai ned in the BoS is the result of much thoughtful prayer and meditation, as well a s plain old academic research, using print and electronic sources.

  • What do you accept as the Highest Power in the Cosmos? (Do you believe in De ity?)

ESW accepts a Deity concept of "the big All", which means that unintelligible en ergy mass from which everything in the Multiverse sprang. Beneath "the big All" in the cosmic hierarchy comes God and Goddess, the masculine and feminine aspect s of Deity whic h are more easily grasped, something Morgaine calls "wrapping your mind around". Beneath God and Goddess, you will find the multitude of pantheons, all the deit ies in which are simply facets of God/dess, each with their own history and trad itions.

  • What is the nature of this "Deity"?

The nature of Deity is dual: masculine and feminine. Each nature has many facets , known as pantheons. Each culture sees the natures of Deity differently. Each nature has a light and dark side, as ESW does not espouse the concept of "pure good" or "pure evil". In addition to God and Goddess, each member of ESW usually relates to a matron/patron god or goddess, chosen either after initiation, or when the deity decides it's time!

  • What is the goal of your path?

The goal of ESW is to achieve and maintain a good working relationship with both the "big All" of God/dess, as well as the individual's personal patron/matron. Also, to maintain a harmonious existence with Nature and with mankind.

  • How do you work to achieve this goal?

The ESW works to achieve this goal through daily meditations and contemplation a bout his/her role in the "big picture". Also, by recycling and attempting to cut down on waste; picking up litter; conserving water; etc, s/he helps the Environ ment. Also, by attempting to adhere to the Rede and to his/her own personal ethical/moral code , a relatively peaceful co-existence with mankind is approached.

  • Does you path work with "magick"? What is the nature of this "magick"? How i s it practiced?

ESW uses magick, but not as a substitute for the spiritual side of the religion, which is what ESW is, first and foremost. The types of magick practiced are sy mpathetic (using poppets, candles, etc), as well as energy-raising/releasing tow ards a general goal. Magick in ESW is typically done within the confines of a consecrated and cast Circle. However, some of the candle magick is done spontaneously during med itation and is not done in a Circle, but is done on the altar or shrine.

  • What are the "Holy-days" associated with your path?

ESW uses the same holy-days as many of the Traditional forms of Wicca, the means of celebration sometimes differ, however.

  • What rituals are associated with your path?

There are several rituals, or rites, associated with ESW. These include: dedicat ion, initiation, instruction, handfasting, wiccaning, full moon, sabbat, and new moon. Also, spontaneous ritual for the sake of having ritual and communing with Deity is known to occur.
