Lily is a local of Bristol, and in fact runs the flower shop in town. But that's not all she sells - Lily is a black market parts dealer, and procures all of the strange equipment needed by Jim and Dr. Breckonridge to build their machines. There is some question as to her feelings for Jim. Some would say that she is in love with him, but I firmly believe that she knows how Jim and Miss China feel about each other, and is trying to goad them into revealing their emotions. She is constantly baiting Miss China with sly remarks and innuendos, but when she is with Jim, all that happens is a discussion of science. Lily, I think, is the most mystical character in the whole book. She seems to know all, and yet reveals little.
