Tucson's newest "little" mariachi, Estrellitas de Oro, was founded in January of 1997. Being from Tucson, Arizona, Mariachi Estrellitas de Oro fashions itself after Tucson-based Mariachi Cobre and its origins. The ages of our mariachis ranges from age 5 to 18.
Estrellitas de Oro is divided into three groups. Our youngest, least experienced mariachis belong to our Beginning mariachi. Those who have learned basic songs and theory go on to our Intermediate mariachi. Intermediate and Advanced practice together making Intermediate members more like alternates for the advanced who cannot perform. More difficult songs are learned in our Advanced mariachi and an audition is required to become a part of the Advanced mariachi.
Currently, scholarship contracts are being arranged for those in our advanced mariachi. For each year in the advanced mariachi, Estrellitas de Oro will supply a $500 dollar scholarship that will go towards a college education. Money earned from each performance goes directly toward the scholarship fund.
What sets Estrellitas aside from other mariachis is that each "tocada", or performances we are hired to do, cost about half what most mariachis charge. Other mariachis charge anywhere from $250 to $300 for an hour of music. Estrellitas asks for a donation of $100 which, as mentioned above, goes directly towards the college scholarship fund for the Advanced mariachi.
