Douglas High School AzPePP Home Page

Welcome to Douglas High School's AzPePP Home Page. What is AzPePP? It stands for the "Arizona Princeton Earth Physics Project." Started at Princeton University, this project seeks to link seismic stations in high schools throughout the country. Students will share their findings not only with each other but with seismic observatories all over the world! The University of Arizona is our home for AzPePP. Universities in other states, including New Jersey and Oregon, have their versions of PePP, too. Douglas is situated on the border of Mexico in the extreme southeastern corner of Arizona. We are about 20 miles from the New Mexico state line. We live in a somewhat seismically active area. As a matter of fact, on May 3, 1889, there was a major seismic event centered in Bavispe, Sonora, Mexico, just 60 miles south of Douglas. Water bubbled up in once dry stream beds in the Sulphur Springs Valley to the north and west of Douglas, creating prime cattle-grazing land. Also, some of Arizona's most famous ghost towns were born of this event! Visit us again as we update our web page!
