Book Review:
You Mean I'm Not Lazy, Stupid Or Crazy?!; A Self-Help Book for Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder by Kate Kelly and Peggy Ramundo with Foreward by Larry B. Silver, M.D. Director of Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Georgetown Uiversity School of Medicine. Our family has been on a six year journey of struggle, confusion, therapy and trying to get a DX and am now processing the possible DX of ADD for my husband and possiblely our 5 1/2 yr. old daughter as well who is also exhibiting some ADD symptoms. This book is indeed a handbook as it takes the reader thru the steps of 1st understanding ADD how it applies to the adult. How to receive and understand what the DX means to the afflicted person as well as to that person's family. The following pages explains each possible characteristic of the ADD person which can be many and no 2 persons afflicted with ADD will have the same characteristics. Then the handbook takes you step by step thru the process of coming to terms with how these characteristics affect your life (work, social settings, family, organizational). And finally a step by step process of coping with each characteristic. This last section is very detailed and very helpful. There is a chapter on Medications if needed and a section on available therapy, and other professional help available. Excellent family resource to those who suspect as well as those dealing with someone who has already been DX with ADD.
Grimm's Fairy Tales; Retold by Rose Dobbs, Illustrated by Gertrude Elliott Espenscheid, Published by Random House, New York. This classic Fairy Tale Collection has all my favorites from childhood. The Brave Little Tailor, The Musicians Of Bremen, Snow White and Rose Red, The Hare and the Hedgehog, The Shoemaker and the Elves, Rumpelstilskin, The Golden Goose and The Sleeping Beauty. Random House Books For Children have been a one-stop resource place for my family to look when shopping for books as gifts for our daughters or to give to extended family members or friends. Included in their book selections are: Picture Books, by Dr. Seuss, Beginner Books, Easy-To-Read Books, Landmark Books, and Allabout Books. Quality, great pictures and excellence in storytelling are all things that we as a family expect when buying to own ourselves or giving as gifts. I highly recommend this book: Grimm's Fairy Tales as well as any book in the above mentoned selections.
Food:
Our family has among other things Italian heritage (husband's side) and so I make alot tomatoe dishes. Usually I buy prepared sauces and paste. But this recipe comes from a mail list that I belong to called
realfood@rmci.net and comes to my email box direct. I then print them
and keep them with my other cookbooks. I choose to share this recipe for Marinara Sauce as the Food catagory for today's issue.
You may however choose to join and receive recipe's also, if you do not already by sending a blank email to, mailto:realfood-on@mail-list.com or visit
their webpage at: or
contact the editor mailto:realfood@rmci.net
Marinara Sauce:
Recipe By: Real Food for Real People
Serving Size: 1 Preparation Time: 0:00
Categories: Vegetarian
6 cans Tomatoes - 16 oz size
1/3 cup Vegetable Oil
6 Garlic Cloves - minced
3 Medium Onions - chopped
4 Carrots - finely chopped
2 Tablespoons Basil - dried
1 Tablespoon Oregano - dried
2 teaspoons Salt
1 teaspoon Pepper
Heat oil in a 5-quart or larger pot over medium heat. Cook garlic, onions and carrots, stirring occasionally, until soft. Crush tomatoes in a large bowl, using a potatoe masher or wire whisk. Stir in tomatoes and juice, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer rapidly, uncovered, stirring occasionally, for about 1 1/2 hours or until sauce is very thick and reduced by about half.
Serve over pasta or vegetables of your choice. (note: I and my family love Marinara Sauce over white long grained rice! you can also serve rice and vegatables and sauce to make a nice well balanced meal with garlic bread with melted cheese ontop).

If you missed this issue please request it be sent to your email box. mailto:family1ormore@yahoo.com subject=Series 1 Vacations
When time or money is of short supply then here are some suggestions.
Mini Vacations: Choose a topic for your vacation. Example: Exploring Ohio (or your state of residence), then plan 1 - 3 day mini vacations by map area of Ohio each day may be a different area or the same area but 1 day may be historical sites, the next day may be fun sites, the next day may be nature trails and parks including camping areas. Mini vacations are ideal when you have changed jobs (one or both spouses) and you have only 1 week or do not qualify for the 2nd week until later in the year.
Weekend Vacations: These can be a great alternative for low budget good times or when you have just started a new job and do not have any vacation time accrued yet. Plan a weekend away to the beach, campgrounds, out of town sporting event, musical concert or church or family event.
1 tank trips - Planned vacations centered on distance. Map out your journey based on how far your vehicle can go and back on one tank. Circle restaurants, amusement parks, family fun centers(commercial), nature centers or parks, zoos....
"Take Me Away" Vacations - Are at home stress reliever vacations. Usually individually taken. Ask spouse or other family member to watch kids while you create a atmosphere of vacation for 1 - 4 hrs. or so. The entire vacation is created in one or more rooms. Bathroom is great for a herbal bubble bath with surrounding scented candles, soothing music and perhaps a box of chocolates or whipped cream and strawberries on the side.
These "Take Me Away" Vacations are designed by you to relieve stress and are for you only. Do Not Allow Interruptions. Unplug the phone or let the machine or voice mail take the messages. Do not answer the doorbell. (If so desired the above can be altered to create the perfect in-home romantic retreat for two)
No Money Vacations:
For those of us short on cash or whose budgets are maxed out with living expenses, paying bills, and other earmarked budgetary necessarities that leave (seemingly) no room for fun!!! Be creative. Pack a picnic lunch and bike or walk to the nearest park (use a car if you must). Explore nearby zoos, parks, nature centers, shopping malls (without spending money- looking and pretending can be fun if done in the right creative spirit), camping can be a very inexpensive thing to do and if all else fails make full use of your backyard both for camping, swimming BBQ's, sports, games and don't forget getting lost in your local library!!! for a day.
Step 2: Preparing For The Trip (see next newsletter titled Series 2 Part 2 Vacations.
