There is great power in the human mind and spirit. From all
past times through this very moment the vibrational qualities of
sounds, notes and music have played a role in the communion
with, release and use of positive abilities found within ourselves.
Concepts that use sound for healing or meditation are cross-cultural
and prominent in religious or spiritual practices. Altered mental
states, emotional energy transfer, emotional purification and
physical healing are among the benefits ascribed to sound by
various peoples. The ancient text of the I Ching, in the hexagram
named Enthusiasm, states it in this manner:
“The enthusiasm of the heart expresses itself
involuntarily in a burst of song, in dance and rhythmic
movement of the body. From immemorial times the
inspiring effect of the invisible sound that moves all
hearts, and draws them together, has mystified
mankind. . . . Music was looked upon as something
serious and holy, designed to purify the feelings of men.”
Applying the basic construction techniques of a single-
chambered Peruvian Whistling Vessel, I have expanded
the range of tones thought to have been used by that culture.
Symbolically, I have abstracted the form of a bird to represent the
flight of spirit; the absence of eyes represents the unseen power of
sound as well as the element of faith. My purpose in creating these
vessels is to uplift the human spirit, to create joy and healing.
