How time does fly! We are commencing our 20th year in the care and maintenance of the statuary at Felix Lucero Park on West Congress. These religious statues were sculptured by Felix Lucero. Lucero served in WWI and in the battle of Chateau-Thierry. After being pinned down by shell fire for serveral days, he mad a vow, that if he survived he would devote 20 years of his life in sculpting religious statues. He kept his promise.
Archbishop D.J. Gercke Assembly undertook the care and maintenance of this project March, 1981. The Staturary and Park were in bad shape. It was necessary to sand blas and repair large cracks in the statues. Painting followed. Some initial volunteers who put in much time were:
Bill Smerz, Joe Mayer, Chick DeChaine, Buck Garcia, Ralph Smith, and Dave Barfuss. As time went on, other loyal workers were: Walt Warner, Larry Camacho, John Babajo, Alex Leyva, Norbert Fey, Lou Peralta, Len Zimmerman, Ben Coronado and Adolph Hauser.
As chairman of this project for 20 years, my sincere thanks to all.
I would like to have some new volunteers, especially during summer months, as I am out of town May through September.
