Artist's Statement
Christine Marek-Matejka
Our perception
about the world and the human condition is only as deep as the experiences that
shape it. Truth is discovered when we
challenge our perceptions about what may or may not in actuality be there.
I believe that the visual arts are an
analytical tool with which to explore the deeper, often convoluted and
contradictory, issues of life. Art
should provoke thoughts and feelings, questions, even discomfort about what we
think and perceive. I variably reveal these contradictory elements through
perspective, context or through my choice of media and surface. Whether my
images are disturbingly dark or energetically light, I strive to bring the
viewer into conflict with his/her preconceptions, to question and analyze the
depth of what is actually being portrayed - the ragged beauty of a wildflower;
the gentle quality of a withered hand's grasp; a side-glance or nostalgic
thought; a foot grounded in space; an ominous moment of innocent and
free-spirited exploration of child-play; the vulnerability of new life.
