Topic: Paintings 2006
Granted, as this year is coming nearer to a close I have formed a fair collection of floral paintings.
At first I wanted to "go inside" the flowers, to their hearts- their centers; I wanted to go beyond perceptions of flower center and enter into a world abstract but at the same time suggestive on another level-the level of surrealism. Iris's were the perfect subject, they have wonderful centers and complex petals. Beyond Iris's centers came a "zoom out" of my sensibilities so to speak. With one painting I began to include the suggestion of leaves and that was it! I was hooked onto a new way of seeing flowers.
The milestone here came with the painting " Peony" a cream coloured frilly beauty that I thought I would never be able to finish because it was a multitude of shades of white. But finish it I did, and in record time, for it was with this painting that I discovered the technique of painting that works for me. An approach that in time will allow me a freedom of expression greater than anything I have encountered before.
I admit that I used images that moved me in the beginning because I did not have the technology ( digital camera) to go exploring. Now I do and so a great many of my latest paintings come from the inspired pictures I take of flowers around the cities gardens and parks.
I have found great inspiration at Vandusen Botanical Gardens and at Stanley park
Indeed, as these magical gardens move with the seasons I am constantly held in awe at the beauty of flowers.
