Most art that is classed as mood or atmosphere could also be classed in some other category instead. What makes a piece into a mood piece is really the intent of the artist more than the style or subject matter of the piece. Where I see abstract as a window into how we think about the world, mood/atmosphere is a look at how we react to the world.
