Welcome to the English Via Computer Fall-Winter 2005-6 Class Web Page

اهلا و سهلا

Welcome

Our class meets every  Wednesday morning, from 10 to 12 now in the Fall Winter term. There is not much time left in this term, but when we saw the web pages that last year's class made (see Spring 2005, below the list of student web pages), we decided we would try to do the same.

Problems reading the .htm hotpotatoes file? Anglelfire's advertisements interfere with the hotpotatoes, but upload it with angelfire anyway and when I find it I will put it on geocities and make a link to it to your home page.  Or, better yet, if you read this, upload with the New, better way to upload your hotpotatoes .htm files

Hot Potatoes can handle Arabic.  Here's an English crossword puzzle:  try it out! Interested in teaching Arabic and being paid to do it in a US university or community college?  Check out the "Scholarships for Study in the West" column below.

Welcome to the English Via Computer Spring 2005 Class Web Page

اهلا و سهلا

Welcome

Our class meets every  Sunday afternoon.  Our teacher is Denis Hoppe, BA Princeton, MA U.Michigan.  This course summarizes the progress made in the field of CALL--computer assisted language learning--and gives us a chance to work in the computer lab with some English teaching activities suggested by the book, CALL by David Hardisty and Scott Windeatt in the Oxford English Resource Books for Teachers series.  Saudi Arabia is well into the computer age.  One can pay one's telephone bill directly through any ATM machine in the kingdom, for example, and internet cafés and computer salerooms are springing up everywhere in Jeddah.  Many schools post the students' report cards on the internet so that a parent can log-in and check the progress of his/her children.  Just this year, Jeddah Teachers' College posts the students final grades on the new College web site. But, as in England, the US, and Canada, the computer is almost non-existent in the English classroom, except in the private schools, like the British Council.  We hope that this course will prepare us for the future for a time when perhaps a generous benefactor will provide computers to the schools where we will teach. In the mean time, just going through the steps of teaching English with computers gives us ideas about how to teach English by traditional methods.
