- All Quiet on the Western Front
A movie that showed the futility of war and the horror of battle in a way never seen before. A group of young men enlist in the German army at the urging of their schoolteacher. They go into war believing that they will fight for honor and glory in the name of the Fatherland; they soon discover, however, that the only glory to be had is the glory of leaving the battlefiels alive.
- Fighting the War
This was a silent movie which showed troop movement and munitions handling, as well as battles,in ways never seen before. This was one of the first movies to use aerial footage, as the filmmaker went above the fighting to see the battles from new angles. Life in the French trenches was captured in a way new to the viewers.
- The Log of the U-35
This was originally shot as a German propaganda film. It was filmed by a German submarine commander. This film documented several ships sinking, some of them shocking in their destructive finality. The movie was copied and printed, and eventually a copy was captured by the British forces and used, ironically, to fuel anti-german sentiment in England and America.
