The ship before the captain

Disclaimer: I don't own the Matrix. Don't sue me.

A captain puts her ship before herself. That was how I’d been taught to act as a captain, and it was one of the first things I’d learned. But now, as Neo tried to talk Roland around, the words of the Oracle rang in my ears.

"He’ll need your help, Niobe, and that is when you must make a choice—to help him, or not to."

Had She meant now? Would I have to give up the Logos? My Logos, the ship I’d piloted through thick and thin for God knows how long, to this coppertop who hadn’t even been in the real world for a full year?

I knew the answer. It was one hell of a wrench saying it, but I knew I had to. Zion was more important than my ship or my feelings. "He can take mine."

"You can’t do that."

Sudden anger flared up and canceled out the pain. How dare Roland tell me what to do with the Logos!

"Don’t even think of trying to tell me what I can or cannot do with my ship after that little speech," I told Roland. There was no time for this sort of crap.

"But for Christ’s sake, Niobe--"

Why wasn’t he getting it? "I’ll pilot this ship. He can take mine. If we leave inside an hour, we should reach Zion as the machines do. That’s as good a plan as any."

Less than an hour before I’d see the last of my ship. After years of piloting it through every danger, this was how we were going to part--me on another ship, the Logos under another pilot. I wanted to laugh and cry at the irony of that situation.

"We’re ready, sir," Mauser said.

"About damn time..."

And so, the time had come. My stomach was churning, every nerve screaming for me to get back on the Logos where I belonged, prophecy and One be damned. But it was too late; my fate was sealed.

Well, if I couldn’t take back what I’d said earlier, I could at least say my last words to the Logos. Take red while you still can, I thought to myself.

"Bye, baby. Take good care of them."

As we flew in different directions, me to Zion’s docks, Neo and Trinity to the machine city, I knew I would never see them, or my faithful Logos, ever again.
