Growing
up in the 60's and 70's was a unique experience because it was a cross
road in time, when the human race reached a level of sentience and
self-awareness. We rioted against injustice, protested against war,
reached out to each other, explored space, explored ourselves, took
drugs and Jesus and TV. I was in college, writing or thinking about
writing, publishing, reading, like a traveling preacher. A time of
mysticism and cosmic awareness. I got the idea for Man Unleashed Upon
The Universe from another prose poem I had written, Under The Blood
Gorged Moon. I wanted to do an illustrated piece, but Moon didn't
lend itself enough. I wrote the script, which I call it when connected
to the book, over a 6 week period. Through a mutual friend, I met
Randy Crawford, a young unknown artist, and presented the idea to
him. He went for it, and in a 27 hours or so stretch, he created all
the drawings. They blew me away. The detail, the variety, the use
of nonverbal illumination. The secret language on the walls of the
spaceship. Together the script and the pictures became more than either
apart. This is a stream of consciousness, an idea carried to the end
that the work itself suggested. No fear, no plan. It is not your normal
story, but then that is not why you are interested in the first place
is it? |
