Opal Nokomis SMITH
I am dedicating this page to my paternal grandmother, Opal Nokomis SMITH Nolen. In my constant search to discover my roots, and uncover my heritage, this one woman's story is what I most desperatly need to find. I have for many years tried to prove the heritage of which Opal Nokomis was so very proud, with no real success. I have discovered, with the help of others, that "proof" may not be all it is cracked up to be!
My grandmother was told that her father was Cherokee and her mother was "Indian, with a little French". After much searching I have come to realize my ancestors are not to be found on any "lists" or "rolls" known to me. Of course there is that possibility of names being changed and not recorded in family history.
I recently discovered that the name my grandmother grew up with was most likely not the name given to her at birth. Research uncovered a "Selva Cox", with my grandmother's birthdate and place, living with the parents who raised Opal Nokomis...Milo and Ida (Cox) SMITH. This new information only seems to confirm what I have believed to be true for the past few years; that my grandmother was not raised by her biological parents. Furthermore, I feel that my grandmother never knew she was not the biological child of the people who raised her.
