El Mago was born Guillermo Sebastian Coria on January 13, 1982; named after another Argentine tennis player, Guillermo Vilas. He was born in Venado Tuerto, about a 4 hour drive from Buenos Aires. As soon as Guille learned how to walk, he could hold a racquet. His dad Oscar was a tennis instructor SO t'was no biggy for him. Eh what else, can you tell I'm typing right off the top of my mind? skip some years yada...When he was...12 (or 13), he attended Apeys tennis school in Key Bascayne in Florida. He said it was a "wake up call" ya cuz he had to do alot of things for himself like wash his clothes and stuff. Slacker! LMAO anyway ahem, Uh, forget when he got back to Argentina but um, there he was the rival of another kid, David Nalbandian, whom of which could never kick Guille's ass ;) (hehehe that might not be entirely true so ignore). Uhm, he went on to win ooooh CRAP how could I forget? Some tournament in Nagasaki Japan with Nally-b. Then he kicked Davids ass in the 1999 Roland Garros Junior finals. Heh, In the second round of that tournament, Guille double-bageled a hungry kid that had beat Andy Roddick in the previous round ;) Then he and David won the Junior doubles at Wimbledon. Grass! anyway...on with the bad news.
During part of 2001 and 2002, Guille had to serve a 7 month suspension and pay $100,000 for testing positive for trace amounts Nandrolone (a semisynthetic anabolic steroid [C18H26O2] derived from testosterone and used to build muscle mass). It could've been worse if he hadn't explained that the nandrolone came from contaminated vitamins he was given. Poor kid was 19 at the time. He cried at the tribunal :'(...I'm gonna cry right now. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10...I'm cool. He said that was the worst part of his life and is one of the main reasons he works so hard to become #1. 2003 was his "breakout year" :D Haha after all that steriod shit was over, he was kicking all the ass that dared to cross his path. Uhm he won Sopot, Hamburg, Simis at Roland Garros, (lost to Martin Verkerk), lost in the first round of Wimbledon, then went on a killing spree winning 3 straight tournaments in a row without dropping a set. Owwies. On to the U.S. Open where he reached the quarters, losing to Andre Agassi (who wanted revenge for RG ;) ) But in getting to the quarters of the USO, he qualified for the season ending Tennis Masters Cup in Houston, Texas. GOD I should've been there. :( anyway, he lost his first round rubber to Rainer Schuettler, but was better in the next rubber destroying Carlos Moya in a beautiful display of speed and agility. His next opponent was Andy Roddick who had just won the USO. Guille lost the first set but won the next in a tiebreak. He was leading in the 3rd but obviously HAD A FUCKING MIND LAPSE and went on the lose the set 6-4. I cried :( ok. But it was all good cuz he ended the year at #5 in the world where as he started at #45 O.O At the end of 2003 on December 28, he married his g/f Carla Francovigh...1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10...I'm cool....sort of. Ok that's all about that. The beginning of 2004 was good, he won Buenos Aires ya so that was cool. He destroyed Moya AGAIN hehehehe. But then everything took a bad turn. Guille had to withdraw from the Hieneken Open in Australia with a 7mm tear in his lower left abdominal wall. Damn if it wasn't on his b-day too. But it was all good. He got this cool looking cake shaped like a Hieneken beer that read "Happy Birthday Guillermo!". I swear I could've done a better job with the lettering BUT we're not talking about art are we? Even though Guille had the injury, he still continued to practice and train for the Australian open. Tennis addict. You got tennis players, then ya got tennis addicts. Unfortunaltely, the injury was more than what he thought (or wanted to think) and he lost in the first round of the AO in straights. Why didn't he retire? How far did he think he could go with a rip in his abs?? Anyway... Made it to the quarters of Indian Wells, lost to Agassi again. But dear Guille was not detered. He fought incredibly in the Nasdaq-100 Open in Miami, Florida. He was down match point to Julien Bennateau of France in the quarters but came back to win. He was also down match point 4 times to Fernando Gonzalez of Chile in the simis BUT y'all know, he's El Mago for crying out loud. In the finals against Roddick he had to default after winning the first set and losing the next 2 because of an apparent injury to his back which he sustained before winning the 1st set. How'd he?..nevermind. The doctors in Miami told him it was a discal hernia and could be MONTHS before he played again!!! But he went back to Argentina and they found it was actually kidney stones. Ooooooooooo Miami is full of quacks ya? ):-> Ok, he couldn't play with the stones ya so he had to drink loads of water to pass them. He said he couldn't stand up, sit down, lie down, NOTHING without being in pain. Took him about a week to pass the stones and he was back to practice. He went on to win Monte Carlo, beating Nalbandian, Safin and Schuettler in a damn row holla holla!!! THEN injury again. A tear in the same place it was earlier in the year. He was quite upset about it poor kid BUT he couldn't do shit but let it heal. He missed Rome and Barcelona but made it to Hamburg where he was the defending title holder. He was sick, had a cold :( But was able to push through some incredibly tough matches. His rival in the finals was Roger Federer, the guy who won this title in 2002. Roger wants the hardware back LMAO!!! Guille won the first set and was leading in the second BUT was unable to keep up the level of play needed to kick Rogers ass. Very disappointing loss for him BUT on to Roland Garros to try and fullfil his dream of winning it. We're not fixing to go into that now cuz we want to be happy right? Ok! Good luck next year Guille!
