ďMockingbirds donít do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. Thatís why itís a sin to kill a mockingbird.Ē
Jemís full name is Jeremy Atticus Finch. He is son to Atticus Finch and brother to Scout Finch. He is four years older than his sister, and his arm was broken badly at the elbow by Bob Ewell when he was 13 years old.
Most times, Jem and Scout get along really well. The only time they used to really fight was when Jem was moody because of puberty and when Scout mentioned the courthouse.
Because Jem is the oldest, he feels that he has to look out for Scout's wellbeing. This is probably why he is usually so protective of her. Someday, Jem wants to be a lawyer, like his father Atticus.
Jem was always playing with Scout at the beginning of the novel, but ash he grew older, he became a bit more mature and was somewhat separated from Scout's antics.
During the story, Jem starts going through puberty. The injustice at Tom Robinson's trial also had a profound effect on him.
Jem is basically the typical boy; he's brave, stubborn, and would never back out on a dare. He is very interested in finding out the truth about Boo Radley, and he cried when Nathan Radley filled the knothole up with cement.
A Quote by Jem:"If there's just one kind of folks, why can't they get along with eachother? If they're all alike, why do they go out of their way to despise eachother? Scout, I think I'm beginning to understand something. I think I'm beginning to understand why Boo Radley's stayed shut up in his house all this time...it's because he wants to stay inside."
