ďMockingbirds donít do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. Thatís why itís a sin to kill a mockingbird.Ē

Dill

Dillís real name is Charles Baker Harris. In To Kill A Mockingbird, he managed to become Jem and Scoutís best friend. Throughout the school year, he lives with his mother in Meridian, Mississippi. During the summers, however, he stays with his Aunt Rachel, who lives right next door to the Finches.

He is two years older than Scout is, and he has grown exceptionally close with both the Finch children. Dill is small for his age, but he is very smart. He first amazed Scout and Jem with his knowledge of Dracula.

Dill is very stubborn and sometimes takes an extreme course of action while trying to take a point. For example, he became very distressed when he found out he would have to spend the summer with his new stepfather, whom he despised, instead of Jem and Scout. Therefore, he decided to run away and hide under Scoutís bed. Dill cannot stand racism, and he was very interested in Boo Radley, just as Jem and Scout had been.

A Quote by Dill:(talking about the way Mr. Gilmer was treating Tom) "I don't care one speck. It ain't right, somehow it ain't right to do 'em that way. Hasn't anybody got any business talkin' like that- it just makes me sick."
