The Whimsical Tarot was created by Dorothy Morrison and illustrated by Mary Hanson-Roberts. The deck is structured after the standard Rider-Waite style with a twist. All of the images are based on Childhood stories. This is a deck geared toward children and beginners (and the young at heart) based on the concept that these child hood stories are already in our head and will simplify the learning process. I hope to go through this deck with my son to see if he gets anything from it and to introduce him to a more traditional Tarot. Though I am not sure how many of the stories he is actually familiar with, or how many of them I am familiar with for that matter.

The Minor Arcana are labeled as Rods, Cups, Swords and Pentacles. With the exception of Aces symbols for these Pip cards are not in the base image itself, but exist in the borders. The Court cards are structured as Page, Knight, Queen and King. The Pages are not represented by people, rather symbols. I could not determine which characters represented the Kings and Queens for each suit. The structure of this deck is very nice in that the cards borders colour coordinate. Orange borders for Rods, Blue for Cups, Green for Pentacles, Dark Red for Swords and “Rainbow” for Major Arcana.

This deck is very light with no scary images. I would say that the colouring and imagery are very trademark Hanson-Roberts (I love this artist’s work). I have been comparing this deck with the Inner Child deck with my son in mind to join me in this journey and decided that of the two, this one would be easier to identify with.

The little white book that comes with this deck is very minimalist and does not specify elements it seems to go along fairly closely with the standard Rider-Waite meanings. There is a supplemental book with this that I will consider getting, but for now I will go off of the LWB.
