The Enchanted Tarot

The Enchanted Tarot is a collaboration of the husband-and-wife team Monty Farber and Amy Zerner. Ms Zerner is the artist who has designed the fabric collages for the 78 cards of the Enchanted Tarot, the more recent Zerner-Farber Tarot and the Instant Tarot. Mr Farber is the author of the accompanying text. Amy Zerner creates fabric collages for each card, from fabric, embroidery and ribbons; she calls the results “tapestries” and the cards are printed from these collages. The Enchanted Tarot has a very Victorian flavour, much more so than on the Zerner-Farber Tarot, which to my mind has a more Phantasmagorical aura.

The illustrations of the Enchanted Tarot are designed to hark back to earlier times, when tradition, history and tribal wisdom were handed down orally and pictures were used to symbolise abstract concepts. The cards are therefore a wonderful aid to meditation, as the illustrations are very attractive and magnetise the reader into the images.

The Majors are bordered in purple signifying “timeless truths” and spiritual issues. The Court cards (“Royalty”) are Princess (Page), Prince (Knight), Queen and King. The traditional suits of Wands, Swords and Pentacles are used, with the only deviation being Hearts for Cups. The traditional rendering of elemental designations are used and the backgrounds of the four suits are coloured according to the healing properties of the suit:

Each card has a threefold explanation:

  • The Dream: a fable describing and illustrating the true meaning of the card, explaining the card’s symbols in terms of an Archetypal dream experience which directly contacts the subconscious
  • The Awakening: evaluating the meaning of the specific card when it appears in the reading
  • The Enchantment: bringing the Magick of the Tarot into “Real Life” through the use of healing rituals, charms, chants and spells
