ILLUSTRATION GUIDELINES

Frequently Asked Questions Vanda Lavar • Illustrator Q: If I approach Vanda to illustrate my book, what should I send her first? A: Send the manuscript your story as an attachment, name the publisher you are going through, or if you are self publishing and give a brief explanation of the type of illustrated book you envision. Q: Am I guaranteed that Vanda will illustrate my book? A: No. Vanda receives many inquiries every week, and on average illustrates no more than 4 books per month. She cannot accept every project. Also taken into consideration is the quality of the story and the publisher who will release the book. Q: I have no idea how many illustrations my book will need, will Vanda know? A: Yes. If your story is reviewed and the artist expresses interest, she will map out the story according to length and subject matter and come up with a number of illustrations required to make the book the best it can be. : What are reason for Vanda declining a project after the prototype phase? A: It can be many. Perhaps the content of the story doesn't provoke many creative images, thus the artist turns it down because she does not think she is suited for the final job. A good working relationship with the author is very important, too. If an author wants to play artist and expects numerous revisions in art, Vanda is not your artist. The artist expects to have creative graphic control of the project once prototype character images are approved. The writer should let the artist employ her talent unimpeded. Q: What about corrections to artwork? A: They will be allowed if there is a factual error in the illustration. As an example, if the story calls for a red bus and the artist draws a blue truck, that would be corrected. Q: But what if I do want additions or changes to the artwork that are not factual corrections? A: Vanda will do this, but only for an additional charged fee. The fee is $75 per hour. Additions are are considered "changes" and additional charged work, and are not considered factual corrections. Q: How will I receive the finished art? A: You will receive two CDs containing all of the original art for your book. One is to keep, the other to mail to your publisher. The digital images are 300 .dpi .jpgs, print standard with all publishers. Q: How will Vanda know what size to draw the artwork? A: Either you can tell here the print size dimensions, or he can contact the art department of your publisher and get the correct specifications. Q: How long will it take for Vanda to complete all the art? A: It varies, but within 2 months. Some books she has illustrated in one month or under, while other’s with complex illustrations may take longer, depending upon both the style and complexity of the illustrations. If there are any other questions, feel free to ask.
