JOAN'S WEDDING VOWS
David,
We were still saying hello when you had to leave.
For years, we flew back and forth -Vancouver to San Francisco.
You became my confidant...Your wit kept me going.
Two people living so far apart couldn't have been any closer.
Today, almost 4 years later, in the final sliver of time,
before we crush the glass,
I ask you...
When the wine is gone,
When the rejoicing subdues,
and the last guest leaves,
in your quietest moments...
Will you look at me with passion ... even when I'm old?
Will you walk with dignity, but be humble in my embrace?
Will you take care of me? Will you let me be strong?
Will you mystify me? Will you let me inside?
Will you be a good father? Will we be good parents?
Will you guide me? Are you willing to learn from me?
Will you confide in me? Would you swear by me?
Will I keep my sense of self? Am I complete without you?
Will you know the difference between...
Apology and atonement?
Fidelity and loyalty?
Distance and privacy?
Will you know that I will always love you?
When we are separated by miles and harsh words,
or the vacuum of repose even beyond life itself?
I will, David.
And all of this that I ask of you... I promise to you,
as I tell the world that I am yours ... forever.
