J. Bates by D. Carrillo
Portrait by Dan Carrillo

Joey Bates was raised in a city amongst the trees, water,
and mountains of Washington. He is the middle child of
three born to a psychotherapist and social worker. At an
early age he was drawn to the arts. Winning a number of
contests held by his peers, he often defended his title as
best drawer at North City Elementary. In middle school he
began a short career in comics, publishing his first comic
BillMan through Citation Press and Red Monkey
Publishing. As high school progressed he became less
and less attuned to comic and illustrative work, eventually
turning to the fine arts. In 2001 he left Seattle for
Grand Rapids, Michigan to attend Kendall College of
Art and Design. To this day he is an obsessive-compulsive
line-maker, arranger, and sorter. He hopes to spend the rest
of his days making art involving extensive line work and people.
His work has been shown in various venues from Institutes
of Contemporary Art to Coffee Shops and Clothing stores.
