Everything Finally Went Right for First Buck Ever

After a last minute scope problem on my crossbow, I had a very short but successful bow season in 2000. The day before the opener I decided to take a few practice shots with broadheads and found that the elevation and windage adjustments quit working, so I had to order a new scope and miss the first few day of season. When my new scope arrived, I mounted it on my crossbow and sighted it in. The first chance I had to go out was Sept. 25, a cold, wet miserable afternoon in northern Minnesota. I almost stayed home where it was warm and dry, but at the last minute I decided to go. I got set up in my blind at 3 p.m., about 26 yards from a deer trail on the edge of a mowed hay field. I was watching the woods where the trail came out on the field. About two and half hours later I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. Coming across the field was a 4-point buck, and he was headed right for me. The buck stopped in front of me where the trail came out of the woods. I placed my crosshair low and behind his front shoulder and pulled the trigger. My arrow flew true as I harvested my first buck ever. It also was my first deer with a crossbow in 12 years. I've missed a couple of deer over the years, but everything worked perfectly this time. I'm already making plans and looking forward to
next season.
