Walkthrough
Now that you've got the
flats down its time to lay down some shadows.
The one question I get asked the most is "How can you tell
where to put the shadows??"
And the only answer i can give them is go buy yourself some
blocks or grab some of your Transformers and a lamp and play
around with them, observing how shadows fall depending on where
your lightsource is.
And the reason I say that is because there honestly is no way you
can tell somebody the one secret on how you tell where to lay
shadows to give the proper 3D effect with a 2D screen
That or you can simply copy what i've shown here :P
The choice is yours
Now to lay down shadows, its a rather easy process.
You have your layer with your flats selected, now all's you do is
create a new layer [shift+ctrl+n] and set the opacity to about
35%
After that, tap "d" on your keyboard. This should
change your color selections to black over white. Now you simply
paint on the shadows the same way you painted in your flats. What
the low opacity black does is it just makes the red a slightly
blacker red. And of course you're free to mess with the opacity
but i've found that 35-40% works just right. And if you need it
darker or just need some more refined shadows, simply create a
new layer set with the same opacity and just paint over some more
shadows.
Mess with it and you'll see what I mean
One thing i do in all my pics is i usually create another layer of shadows, just to refine and define the character[s] some more
