1700s Barbed Export Dish Exceptional Fine Grisaille Landscape |

This is an exceptional Chinese export plate from the 18th century or earlier. It is a grisaille landscape of exceptionally fine detail. The thin thin lines give a furry appearance when viewed normally by eye or by lens. But a magnified view (see pic) reveals the idyllic water scene with incredible detail. Very nice form with the slightly barbed rim and the old border decorations in grey and gold. About 1.5" high x 8" rim diameter . A little gold gilt loss. And alas there is an old tight hairline to the right of the center medallion about 4" long. The line does not appear on the bottom. Also a small foot rim chip. Otherwise good condition. This is a rare period Chinese export, a real tour de force. Unique and not likely to find another. |
