Fine 19th Century Tonzhi Hexagonal Tiger Footed Bowl. |

This is a wonderfully painted famille rose hexagonal bowl of a happy tiger. The tiger is a favorite Chinese subject although they are hard to find in porcelain. The interior and the bottom are of turquoise. The porcelain texture has a rough (by domestic Chinese standards) orange peel effect so desirable on old export porcelain dating from this time period. This footed form was often used for altar vessels to make offerings. Wonderful wave motif around the footrim. There is a red seal mark of Tongzhi 1862-74 and it is of the period. Approximately 7" across. A rare & exceptional mark and period bowl from this boy emperor's short reign. This era is generally considered to be a low point in Chinese porcelain due to the destruction of the kilns and the poverty of the Imperial Treasury. However, it is possible to find charming examples where the skill of the craftsmen transcended his environment. It is as good an example of late Qing porcelain as I have seen in this sense. The bowl compares favorably with anything of the period published in Gunhild Avitabile's From the Dragon's Treasure. |
