Welcome to the Learning and Teaching English Via the Computer Home page at Jeddah Teachers College
اهلا و سهلا
Jeddah Teachers' College is located about 15 minutes north of the city center in a fashionable residential area of Jeddah known as Al-Faisaliyya. It is is just off Sari Street between Medina Road and Astronomy Square(Meidan Falaki), but our postal address is: Teaching and Learning English via the Computer(attention Denis Hoppe), P.O. Box 15758, Jeddah 21454, Saudi Arabia.
Our class meets every Sunday from 6-8pm. Our teacher is Denis Hoppe, BA Princeton, MA U.Michigan. This course summarizes the progress made in the field of CALL--computer assisted language learning--and gives us a chance to work in the computer lab with some English teaching activities suggested by the book, CALL by David Hardisty and Scott Windeatt in the Oxford English Resource Books for Teachers series. Saudi Arabia is well into the computer age. One can pay one's telephone bill directly through any ATM machine in the kingdom, for example, and internet cafés and computer salerooms are springing up everywhere in Jeddah. Many schools post the students' report cards on the internet so that a parent can log-in and check the progress of his/her children. But, as in England, the US, and Canada, the computer is almost non-existent in the English classroom, except in the private schools, like the British Council. We hope that this course will prepare us for the future for a time when perhaps a generous benefactor will provide computers to the schools where we will teach. In the mean time, just going through the steps of teaching English with computers gives us ideas about how to teach English by traditional methods.
