Black Shadows

Okay..this step is very subtle, but it will help make your image even more striking. Subtle color and shading is great for making a piece more dramatic. In this case, what I've done is deepened the dark tone in between the dark red and the light red with a dusting of black pixels. I use the airbrush tool at about 40%, with a small fuzzy brush setting. You don't have to do this technique on every place where light red and dark red meet (or light and dark yellow, or light and dark purple), but as you can see here if you look closely, it's giving the purple spine shields and the cheek even more depth. I've also started to soften the edges of the dragon by using the smallest brush with the black airbrush tool, and outlining key features in black (like the eyebrow, nose and war beak)
