| Now our wing outline is done, so we can start
to create guidelines for coloring in each feather. Feathers aren't flat,
so we have to shade them as we color them. They have a ray (a tube) in
the center that's thicker than the outlying hairs that extend from it.
If you've ever found a feather and taken a good look at it, you know what
I'm talking about. If you've never seen and handled a feather, head down
to your local craft store and buy some. It's worth the dollar or two, really.
:)
In the case of this wing, I've decided that the primaries, secondaries
and their contour feathers are going to be a blue purple, but for visual
interest, I've made the interior contour feathers a bright yellow. Coloring
wings can be addictive because you can do so much with them like this. |
