Drawing Feathered Wings Basic Tutorial

Another tutorial from Dee Dreslough.

Step 11 - Primaries and Contours

Next, you can start to add detail to the primaries and the contour feathers. Since they're larger, they're going to show more detail than the much smaller contour feathers on the leading edge of the wing. First, highlight the ray of each feather with a very light highlight color, or white. Lightly sketch the hairs radiating from the ray at the center of the feather. In this case, I've sketched any hairs on the top half of the primary in white, and any on the lower half in gray, since that part of the feather is in shadow.  Yes, it's a lot of nitpicky work, but the effect you'll get when you're done is worth it.
