| Next, you can start to add detail to the primaries
and the contour feathers. Since they're larger, they're going to show more
detail than the much smaller contour feathers on the leading edge of the
wing. First, highlight the ray of each feather with a very light highlight
color, or white. Lightly sketch the hairs radiating from the ray at the
center of the feather. In this case, I've sketched any hairs on the top
half of the primary in white, and any on the lower half in gray, since
that part of the feather is in shadow.
Yes, it's a lot of nitpicky work, but the effect you'll get when you're
done is worth it. |
