The Star Spangled Season Continues

Summer is here and Sarasota heats up. Many docent shifts are lacking their number of dedicated docents who are up north or on vacations. The Ringling "diggers" can keep informed about the events at the Museum and learn of www Art sites in this monthly web page.

Aaron DeGroft spoke to the docents at a slide presentation on 6/10 about the paintings in the current Exhibit An American Anthem from the Butler Institute of Art. Joseph Butler, like John Ringling, used his fortune to passionately collect Art.

Since the Tragedy of  9/11 a renewed intrest in the "American Spirit" has swept the country. On the web the report of the sale of Norman Rockwell's painting, Rosie the Riveter for $4.9 million at a Sotheby's auction, on 5/22 was "Big" news. The 1943 painting became a cover for the Saturday Evening Post and was taken around the U.S. to help sell war bonds. The model for Rosie, Mary Keefe, now 78 posed for the painting when she was 19. Rockwell used Keefe's face but modeled Rosie's body on Isiah from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling.
