    What was new in 2004
The year's event promised to be one of the best martial arts tournaments ever held in Canada and the Canadian Open Martial Arts Challenge kept it's promise.. The Canadian Open featured top black belt competitors from across Canada as well as the World Sport Karate Federation International circuit, competing in 125 divisions. The Canadian Open also featured 75 under belt divisions using the Tour Canada rules. As in years past all our under belt divisions ran smoothly from 11:00am to 2:00pm on Saturday. The event featured several new and exciting improvements:

  • Separate Extreme forms Divisions for those competitors who incorporate a high level of gymnastics, acrobatics and tricks into their forms.
  • Open Forms Divisions, for those competitors who incorporate more traditional martial arts techniques and less gymnastics, acrobatics and tricks into their forms.
  • Extreme tricks competition sponsored by Century Martial Arts. Competitors have 30 seconds to perform sequences of trick routines. The prize is a $500 Century Gift Certificate.
  • New Kempo, Korean, Soft style and Japanese traditional divisions have been added to give all competitors a fair chance in forms competition.
  • Team Forms division can feature 2 to 5 competitors with an option of using music and or weapons. The top two Teams will perform in the Evening Finals Show. The prize money will equal 50% of the total registration fee collected.
  • Three separate weapons categories for Black belts. Traditional weapons where the score is based on a competitors ability to perform basic strikes and blocks, Open weapons where competitors scores are based on a combination of traditional martial arts techniques with creativity and the Extreme weapons where a majority of a competitor's score is based on degree of difficulty in handling the weapon.
  • All Black Belt grand championship divisions will be held in an Evening finals show on Saturday night. All competitors can use their wristbands to attend the show for FREE.
  • This year the Tournament hotel, The Hilton is connected to the London Convention Centre. Competitors do not have to venture outside in order to compete. The hotel will fill up soon so book your room early.
  • Two separate prices for registration. Black Belt registration will reflect the cost of most National events across the country. Under Belts will have a lower fee for their registration.
  • All competitors who take advantage of the early bird registration (before September 25) receive a $10 off coupon towards a Canadian Open Tournament T-Shirt.
