velvet winter
Now Playing: the divine comedy - something for the weekend
Topic: self-portraiture
It seems almost every time I post here I'm in a hurry these days. Although this weekend less so. I'm concentrating on my photography all this weekend, most evenings this week, and next Saturday.
I've been itching to create new work, get back to editing my backlog, and try to get some of the ideas that have been whirling around my head out of there and onto my camera's memory card. So far so good this weekend, with my first self-portrait shoot completed by 10am :D
However, I'm not making things easy for myself: I bit the bullet and joined a gym last week, including a "starter pack" of three 45 minute sessions with a personal trainer to kickstart my regime. But I am seriously unfit and was a bit too ambitious with my second workout, which meant I strained my right calf muscle again and was off my feet and off work for the past two days. Thankfully an ultrasound confirmed it wasn't torn, which my previous doctor had thought was the case, so it's getting better with rest and I should be able to think about returning to the gym for much more restrained attempts soon.
Suffice to say, between my current day job, the gym and a daily three hour round-trip commute, my time spent on photography is being somewhat restricted at the moment. But I am looking forward to flying down to Melbourne on the 22nd, spending a few days there, then a nearly two week road trip back to Brisbane with Phil Ivens and one of his friends. The highest priority (apart from ensuring we visit as many rainforests as possible, keep our verticals vertical and our contrast away from the high end) is photography, photography, photography. And sound recording. And, it seems we will be lucky enough to spend the Easter long weekend hanging out at a friend's property near the Blue Mountains!
When I return I will have to make a call about whether I find a place of my own closer to town for six to twelve months, until I am ready to head overseas; or stick it out here with my folks until then.
Meanwhile, it may be summer here, but it's been raining an awful lot for somewhere folk like to call "the sunshine state". Thankfully we're not in areas like Charleville which has been flooded thrice in five days :-S
These flowers? They're Winter Velvet Allamandas, which blossom in a darker hue in winter. I've been wanting to do a self-portrait incorporating these beauties adorning a trellis down the side of my parents' house for a while now, and with the overcast, raining-on-and-off weather today, the final image ended up with more of a winter than a summer look, which suited me just fine.
Hope you're all having a wonderful start to the weekend!
