game

Left: Ligeia
Right: Me

This week I was the one selecting themes, and being uber-nerdy, chose words that were homonyms: words with more than one meaning that are spelt and pronounced the same.

I gave myself and Ligeia the theme of game, and despite the variety of definitions, we both ended up choosing to depict the playing of a game. Admission: I already had in mind what my image would be before selecting the theme, as I felt with so many photos to edit from my road trip, taking something new might be a bit much! So I had already decided to use a self-portrait from Walhalla Cemetery where I look like I'm playing Hide'n'Seek.

Ligeia had toyed with ideas of Rubik's Cubes and chess, but having just gotten a super-cute little kitten, decided to photograph it at play.

She sent me two images which initially I thought wouldn't match very well with my image, but on placing the images together, I realised the brown tones from her image worked well with the browns in the left half of my image. I had originally paired the other image she sent me with mine, but on looking again at this image realised that myself and her kitty, Byron, are in somewhat similar poses and we made a nice mirror image together!

You can see the other images from Week 8 appearing on the Divine Diptych Project blog now.

in a graveyard

I'm finally getting a chance to go through my photos from my road trip. I'm starting with my self-portraits for a couple of reasons that will be explained sometime soon.

This is one from a shoot I did at the Walhalla Public Cemetery. One of my favourite cemeteries, in the small town of Walhalla, in Victoria.

I visited there for the first time in 2005 after seeing a piece about the town on The Age website. I didn't know they had a cemetery, let alone one set atop a hillside as you enter the town from the south. I gasped aloud when I saw it.

For those new to my photography, that may not be aware, I have something of an obsession with graveyards and cemeteries and photograph them at every opportunity. I am currently behind on editing photos taken at a number of cemeteries, but you can get the general idea of my fascination with these places by visiting the sepulchre i and sepulchre ii sections of my website. Some of my film images of Walhalla Public Cemetery can be found there, including this one.

Unfortunately due to time restrictions and the distance we were covering in just three weeks, I only managed to photograph in two cemeteries on the road trip: this series of self-portraits in Walhalla Public Cemetery, and images of the graves at Kiandra Cemetery.

off with her head!

Just dropping in to let you know the Flower Power exhibition is still on at the Artworkers Alliance gallery at the old Paddington Substation in Brisbane until 24th April, and they have an open day from 10am-12pm on the 24th, which I'm planning to attend. They actually changed the opening and closing dates back a week from my original post about it, but as I was on my road trip when they did it, I wasn't able to update the info. So you have one more week (or most thereof) to see my three prints and lots of other floral beauty.

I'm also letting you know I've entered an image into the latest round of the Saatchi Showdown. Feel free to vote.

I have two images in the latest issue of F-Stop Magazine.

And, excitingly, I'm included in the latest issue of the Australian Art Collector Magazine. Though funnily enough, it's not my work; it's an image from a series by Nick Kind that I posed for just before leaving Melbourne. His exhibition of images from the shoot, Interference, will run from 4 - 17 June 2010 at Brunswick Street Gallery in Melbourne. I had thought until today that I wouldn't be able to make it to Melbourne for the show, but a little birdy told me something that's as yet unconfirmed, so still secret, but I may be back in Melbourne again sooner than expected.

I'm also pretty pleased to be in this particular issue as there is an ad for the new Bill Henson exhibition on the back cover; but even more special, there is a piece on undiscovered artists which includes the fantastic Lauren Olney, whose project graces the front cover. Amusingly, I picked up the magazine and thought, "oh... someone's done a copy of Beautiful Agony...", a website of various anonymous punters showing their pleasure all over their faces as they pleasure themselves. Only to find that Miss Olney is actually the brainchild behind the project and website, which I did a tribute to in my 365 Days project.

You can see new works for Week 7 of the Divine Diptych Project here.

Oh, and lastly, I've been quite pleasantly surprised by all the views on my Facebook page the past few weeks - generally 300-400 views a week lately :o So thank you if you're a fan or have happened by.

Still haven't had a chance to get onto road trip photo editing - this is a shot from last October! - but working on it!

pre-raphaelites

Left: Me
Right: Leilani Winslade

This week rowandevoe came up with some very lavish themes for The Divine Diptych Project, and selected Pre-Raphaelites for myself and Lani.

I have been a fan of their work for quite a long time, and though I've thought regularly about doing work in the style of the Brotherhood, I've never really felt game; or I felt I needed elaborate props, costumes, etc.

But on giving myself a refresher on the artists involved with the movement, I realised John William Waterhouse was considered to be a Pre-Raphaelite artist, despite not being born until the year the Brotherhood made a stir in London.

On my recent road trip, I took some self-portraits as a tribute to the lovely series of Bathtub Portraiture by a friend of mine, Jessica Tremp, and reviewing the images, realised there was a certain similarity of feel and pose between some of the images and Waterhouse's The Lady of Shallot, probably one of his best known paintings.

With such a strong theme and so much variety in the work of the Brotherhood, it was bound to be difficult to just coincidentally have our work fit together as perfectly as some of the previous diptychs, but I think Lani and I produced images that fit the brief well and work quite reasonably together.

I love the lush, romantic feeling of Lani's image.

Left: Kerrie
Right: Me

This week was a bit crazy for me, coming in late on the themes as I was on my road trip for the past three weeks.

I was a bit stumped initially on what to do for the theme of artificial, but I decided the blue wig I bought at a theatre's garage sale a few months ago would do nicely as a blatantly artificial subject.

All I knew about Kerrie's image before shooting mine was that she had already taken it, it was portrait format, and that it was on the desaturated end of things, which I totally forgot about when shooting my image, as you might be able to tell by the vibrant blue of the wig...

I love Kerrie's image and her concept for the theme, and despite my initial concern that my image was over-simplified by comparison, I think the two images end up working quite well together, especially as we're both totally 'armless ;o)

I'm loving catching up with everyone's creativity in my absence; and with the wonderful themes provided by rowandevoe for Week 7 I'm sure there'll be some brilliant pairings to come!

Meanwhile, I've finally finished importing and sorting the 11GB+ of images I took on my travels, and will hopefully get to some editing and posting this week.

Have missed everyone terribly, and hope you've all been looking after yourselves!

untitled #164

Now here's a slightly different opening paragraph for me:

If you're in Brisbane you should check out the first Artworkers Alliance members' exhibition, Flower Power, taking place at their new gallery in the old Paddington Substation opening on March 26 and running until 17 April.

I have the above image taken on Lamma Island, i never promised you a rose garden and untitled #6261 included in the show, and it will be the first showing of my work in Brisbane!

Unfortunately I won't be able to go to the opening, as I'll be on a road trip driving from Melbourne back to Brisbane at the time, but can't wait to see the show when I get back.

The address for the Paddington Substation is 150 Enoggera Tce, Paddington.

On a more familiar sounding note, if you're in Melbourne you should check out the Williamstown Festival Contemporary Art Prize at The Substation in Newport, which runs until 28th March.

My image charlotte sometimes is included in the prize.

The address for The Substation is 1 Market St, Newport.

Unfortunately at this stage it seems I won't be able to check out the prize as it's only open 10am to 4pm Thursday to Sunday, and I'm likely to be out of the city again from Wednesday afternoon.

Which in itself really isn't too unfortunate, as I'm looking forward to being on the road with Philip and Becky and taking lots and lots of photos, including more self-portraits for my interior / exterior series.

See you on the flipside!

dirty

Left: Meganzii Right: me

The lovely Elle Moss came up with the themes for week three of the Divine Diptych Project, and she didn't disappoint, inspiring all of us, I'm sure.

Meg and I both had the opportunity to shoot over the weekend, so we dove straight into our 'dirty' theme.

The only discussion we had beforehand was regarding format (which was a very vague discussion, but decided when I took my self-portraits and let Meg know I'd shot landscape), and Meg wanted to work in colour.

Despite knowing nothing of each other's intent, location, props, colour palette, or even whether either of us were doing self-portraits, I squealed with joy when I saw Meg's three image options! Somehow we'd managed to work in very similar colours - green, pink and flesh tones - and both had flowers and leaves as a feature in our composition.

I paired my image with two of Meg's to give her a couple of options, but we both agreed this pairing was strongest: a nice echo between the curve of Meg's hand and the (slight) curve of my body, and a feeling that the out of focus leaves in the bottom right corner of Meg's shot are coming into focus in mine.

Though my original idea had been to combine being dirty, with dirty pictures (a sort of centrefold image) and a dirty look at the camera (somewhat subverting the dirty picture idea with a bit of a Cindy Sherman-esque centrefold - a defiant "I know you're looking at me, but I'm not doing this for your enjoyment" kind of thing) I ultimately decided to go with a less confrontational version of my image when pairing it up with Meg's to give a softer approach that fit more with her image.

We're both quite pleased with our work this week, and can't wait to see what the other ladies come up with!

Left: me
Right: :anna:

Anna and I have joined in the fun of the Divine Diptych Project for the first time this week. I think both of us felt that maybe we didn't have time for a weekly project, but ultimately decided the incentive to create was too good, and were greatly impressed by the diptychs created by the other ladies in week one.

Due to the time difference, with Anna being in the UK and myself being in Australia, our quick emails prior to shooting only covered discussion of format, and that Anna wanted to work in colour (I forgot to ask, but had this very colourful image in mind, so was relieved when Anna hadn't opted for B&W).

I also mentioned I had no issue whatsoever with mixing and matching format: landscape and square, portrait and landscape...

I love Anna's image, but initially was concerned about matching up the bold colours in my image with the beautiful muted tones in hers. But I think the echoing positioning of the shoes, the diagonals leading your eye from my image to Anna's and the red popping in both images brings them together much better than I'd have expected.

You can follow the project here, there's some wonderful artists involved.

velvet winter
Now Playing: the divine comedy - something for the weekend
Topic: self-portraiture

winter velvet

It seems almost every time I post here I'm in a hurry these days. Although this weekend less so. I'm concentrating on my photography all this weekend, most evenings this week, and next Saturday.

I've been itching to create new work, get back to editing my backlog, and try to get some of the ideas that have been whirling around my head out of there and onto my camera's memory card. So far so good this weekend, with my first self-portrait shoot completed by 10am :D

However, I'm not making things easy for myself: I bit the bullet and joined a gym last week, including a "starter pack" of three 45 minute sessions with a personal trainer to kickstart my regime. But I am seriously unfit and was a bit too ambitious with my second workout, which meant I strained my right calf muscle again and was off my feet and off work for the past two days. Thankfully an ultrasound confirmed it wasn't torn, which my previous doctor had thought was the case, so it's getting better with rest and I should be able to think about returning to the gym for much more restrained attempts soon.

Suffice to say, between my current day job, the gym and a daily three hour round-trip commute, my time spent on photography is being somewhat restricted at the moment. But I am looking forward to flying down to Melbourne on the 22nd, spending a few days there, then a nearly two week road trip back to Brisbane with Phil Ivens and one of his friends. The highest priority (apart from ensuring we visit as many rainforests as possible, keep our verticals vertical and our contrast away from the high end) is photography, photography, photography. And sound recording. And, it seems we will be lucky enough to spend the Easter long weekend hanging out at a friend's property near the Blue Mountains!

When I return I will have to make a call about whether I find a place of my own closer to town for six to twelve months, until I am ready to head overseas; or stick it out here with my folks until then.

Meanwhile, it may be summer here, but it's been raining an awful lot for somewhere folk like to call "the sunshine state". Thankfully we're not in areas like Charleville which has been flooded thrice in five days :-S

These flowers? They're Winter Velvet Allamandas, which blossom in a darker hue in winter. I've been wanting to do a self-portrait incorporating these beauties adorning a trellis down the side of my parents' house for a while now, and with the overcast, raining-on-and-off weather today, the final image ended up with more of a winter than a summer look, which suited me just fine.

Hope you're all having a wonderful start to the weekend!

Just a quick one to say "If you're in Melbourne, this opens Thursday 4th March! If you can't make the opening, be sure to get down and check it out when you can".

That is all.
