born from this earth and taken by the wind

This is not a self-portrait.

This is the fantastic brainchild and imaginings of Paul Louis Villani.

In addition to taking self-portraits in pastel-coloured rooms and halls, and photographing gorgeous girls in frocks, and topless long-locked boys in the shiny steel drawers of the morgue; I also made time during the recent weekend at Aradale to climb into a metal chimney for Mr Villani with contortionist moves that closely resembled the way a chicken wishbone looks not long before it is split in two between you and your sibling.

Despite how that sounds, it was a pleasure posing for him whilst Karen threw material in the air on short notice. Finally a little proof that I can look presentable in photos others take of me! [And you can view it larger here].

Paul's image above and his other entries can be seen at Brunswick Street Gallery's Picture This prize until the 25th of September. In the same room you can see my four entries into the prize, and around the whole gallery there are many wonderful photographs by many local photographers whose work I love.

If you're roundabout these parts you might like to drop in from 6-9pm Wednesday 24th September for the closing night announcement of prizes.

I've decided to make a number of my non-limited edition images available as matted, mounted and framed prints through RedBubble, in addition to the greeting cards I'd already made available.

Limited edition, signed & numbered prints will still only be available directly from my website, but should you be so inclined please do peruse my photographs now available as wall art through le bubble.

to dream more, to dream all the time

"If a little dreaming is dangerous, the cure for it is not to dream less but to dream more, to dream all the time."
- Marcel Proust.

Just a reminder to those in Melbourne that I have four images in the Picture This 08 prize opening tonight at Brunswick Street Gallery, as well as appearing in one of Paul Louis Villani's images. There will be a number of Flickrites and Bubblers about, so come on down!

Also, if you'd like to see a bit more about Aradale Mental Hospital, there is a video on YouTube put together by Hudcomm at the recent photo weekender there. Myself, Karen and Greg can be seen in the car park at about 50 seconds in, and then I'm the short girl with hair flying across her face, a clothes rack under one arm and a strangely husky voice talking to camera straight after. Oh dear :P

Speaking of videos, there's a nice little piece about RedBubble (Brent Chandler's favourite online shopping site) on 9am with David and Kim. Scoot forward to about the 5:20 mark to cut to the chase.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Friday 12th September 2008

**Press Release**

She Took Her Own Picture --- 44 female artists from across the world have come together online to self-publish a collection of photographic self portraits---

The group of women, most whom have never met each other, have collaborated through a photo-sharing website where they share their work online, to produce a book of their self-portraits.

She Took Her Own Picture: Selections from the Female Self Portrait Artists' Support Group will be available this Friday, 12th September 2008. The unique venture comes as a first for women's photographic self-portraiture today.

Self-publishing the book through Blurb.com, the artists hope the book will serve as a prototype to target suitable art publishers and make the book available on a wider basis, with the aim of donating a percentage of the profits to women's causes.

The participants, both amateurs and professionals, range in age and origin and hail from North and Latin America, the UK and Ireland, Australia, the Caribbean, Oceania, and all over Europe. These 44 women however, are only a small percentage of over 1000 female self-portrait artists who congregate in the Female Self Portrait Artists' Support Group, a group on Flickr started by Laurel Fiszer from Ireland, where the idea for a book of work first began. The group was set up to provide a "collective of women photographers who strengthen their friendship by sharing inspired, artistic, and well-executed photographs".

"Laurel's primary goal," says Natalie J. McCarthy, writer of the introduction to the book, "was to create a place online where female photographers could share self-portraits and receive constructive criticism in a supportive, encouraging, and non-judgmental environment.

"She noticed that female self-portrait photographers were often seen as narcissistic princesses who had to defend their work against an onslaught of criticism — most of which was not directed toward the photograph's technical merits."

The group argues that the female self-portrait has proved to offer women artists a powerful opportunity: the chance to categorically refute antiquated notions of the woman's role as an art object, and to create a new, empowered vision of the female model. She Took Her Own Picture, whilst constructed upon this feminist foundation, also presents a collection of first-rate photography.

"At the end of the day", says McCarthy, "they bring you into their circle of friends and share their art with you".

truth lies beyond

"We must never be afraid to go too far, for truth lies beyond" – Marcel Proust.

Four self-portraits I created at Aradale Mental Hospital this past weekend will be included in the Picture This 08 Prize opening at Brunswick Street Gallery at 6pm on Friday 12th September.

If you're in Melbourne please come on down and check out the show. If I'm not mistaken there will also be a photograph of me in the show taken by someone else *shock! horror!*

Also, there is now a People's Choice Award within the Photography.Book.Now competition that I have entered my book "darkness & light" into. You are only able to vote for one book in the competition so registration is required, however if you've already bought a copy or have created your own book you'll have already registered on Blurb.com, and if you are going to buy a copy then you'll need to register, so it's not too big a deal ;o) Voting is open until September 10, so get to it!
