(1)The Pioneers
The first railways were built for use in mines and ironworks. A Cornish engineer called Richard Trevithick built the first steam-powered locomotive. It first ran in South Wales in 1804. Another mining engineer, George Stephenson, built the first passenger railway from Stockton to Darlington, in the north east of England. It was opened in 1825. The steam engine Locomotion traveled at 24kph over a distance of 65 kilometres.

A hundred years ago, there were no giant diggers or powerful bulldozers. Rail cuttings and embankments were dug by human muscle power. Armies of workers shifted soil, laid tracks and built bridges.
