Eridu (Abu-Shahrain):

The Semitic corruption of the old name of Eridugga, “good city”, at present day the Modern mounts of Abu-Shahrain, nineteen kilometers to the southwest of UR, now marked by low mounds and sand dunes surrounding a ‘Ziqqurat’, or stage-tower, erected by Amar-Sin, king of the Third Dynasty of UR (2046-2038 B. C).

It housed the seat of Enki, at the “Sea-House”, Enki, was the god of wisdom and of the sea and river. At Eridu, in a large cemetery outside the settlement, adults and children alike are lying supine on a bed of potsherds in cist-graves lined and covered with mud bricks.
