With its twin-city Borsippa, founded as early as 3800 BC played insignificant role in the country’s history until about 2300 BC by defeating the Elamites that Hammurabi was able to create the Babylonian Empire and rule it from his capital city Babylon.
It was one of the oldest cities in the world (Gen.10v10). Hammurabi, the great lawgiver, became its ruler in the 18th century BC Babylon later reached its great power under King Nebuchadnezzar II (circa 605-562 BC), capturing Jerusalem and its people and deporting them all to Babylonia.
Babylon was famous for its "Hanging Gardens," one of the eight wonders of the world.
