Blues

February 8, 2004

I finished a watercolor this week. To celebrate the New Year, shortly after Pattie went to bed after we watched the ball drop on TV, I decided to start a watercolor. I happened to be sitting on my red chair looking at my guitar and amp, so that's what I quickly sketched out on my watercolor block.

The guitar has been a recurrent object in my body of work. I find the balance of curvilinear and straight shapes on a guitar fascinating. For this particular piece, I used two interlocking circles with an interlocking half circle at the top as the basis for my guitar body:

Although abstraction is somewhat subtle, it is clearly evident. There is a fascinating ambiguity between the background (floor) and left edge of the top of the amp. The color of both areas is similar and the tone is nearly the same-a thin red line is the only distinction given.
