I work at a tourism center, so it's hard to remember where everyone is from. But the point I am making, she was telling me about an Orange Basket, not the color orange, but the design. It was actually used to gather oranges in the South. She said it was very large, had a small opening at the top, and had a handle on each side at the top. Does anyone have a picture of such a basket? Best of all, does anyone have a pattern for this basket? Thanks David for all your help. It's botanical name is Hierochloe Odorata and is different from the South Carolina Sweetgrass, Muhlenbergia Filipes. I wrote an article on the two species a while back in my Wicker Woman's Weavings newsletter, think it was the July 2004 issue. Then in August an herb grower, author, friend of mine, did another one specifically on the Hierochloe Odorata and it's relationship and meaning to the Native Americans. The sweetgrass we have up here rarely gets taller than 18 inches and is very fine when it dries. It can be easily mistaken as just another grass. So when harvesting, the gatherer needs to really know what they are looking for, otherwise the person that purchases the braids or clumps is paying for regular grass not Hierochloe Odorata sweetgrass! Each leaf curls in on itself, making it look like a very fine strand of grass almost hair-like in width, and there are usually about three to five per individual stalk. Each leaf is flat with one spine, shiny on one side, dull on the other, with a reddish/purple cast to the stalk at ground level. Since it grows in small clumps and multiplies through rhizomes, the preferred method of harvesting is by cutting off at ground level rather than pulling up by the roots. Since palmetto is not native to this area, nor is yucca, but birch and black ash are, I think I might try coiling using those materials instead of the waxed linen. But will also try the artificial sinew. I experimented around with the dried grass and freshly picked, and although the "green" stuff stayed a pretty green color, it also made the weaving very lose as you mentioned it would. Another thing that affected the color, was how I dried the material. If I put the grass in a brown paper bag as apposed to leaving it out on the table to dry, it stayed a nice green color. Otherwise it dried to a light brown color. In old black ash baskets in this area, I've found that the Natives used sweetgrass as a weaver after having made slim braids out of it, so sometimes wove it in without braiding. So I tried that too, and braided an extremely long braid which I intended to make a hat out of. I changed my mind however, and created a stunning antler basket bowl instead, which had smoked round reed spokes with the braided sweetgrass as the weaver. Against the stark white naturally shed antler, the sweetgrass is a sight to behold, it's one of my most favorite new baskets and is in my antler art exhibition going on this month in Grand Rapids, Minnesota at the MacRostie Art Center. Check out my Blog for pictures. Again, thank you Pam for all your wealth of information on coiling with sweetgrass! I will be going to Houston Texas for a few weeks to spend the holidays with my son his wife and my grandson. I can't wait to get my hands on my grandson. He is 14 months old now and walking around and getting into everything. He is also starting to say words. What I need is to find a supply store for reed. Does anyone know of such a store? Even if it is an hour to hour and half drive would be great for me. I have never been in a basket store so I would love to find one. I have learned quite a bit about weaving baskets since I was here last time. I am in the process of buying reed supplies little by little. I received my first order of reeds from Basketpatterns and was completely happy with the quality of their product and price. Any advice to a new basket weaver or new basket patterns I should get? I have quite a few now. I love to weave! I am hooked!! I just need to be cloned so I can get my cross-stitching and hardanger done. I love to do all these crafts. I wish you all a safe, peaceful and blessed holiday. Happy New Year!!! And drive safe out there.
